The U.S. senator and onetime prisoner of war John McCain defined courage as a brief, singular occurrence: “that rare moment of unity between conscience, fear, and action, when something deep within us strikes the flint of love, of honor, of duty, to make the spark that fires our resolve.”
I both agree and disagree with this statement.
Courage Moves You
The part I agree with, is that courage is a moment of unity between conscience, fear and action … that fires our resolve”. It’s a moment where you choose to move, whether that’s mentally, physically, spiritually or emotionally. It requires a definitive decision’s; no ifs, buts or maybes. And, as a definitive decision, it has you moving in a direction; a direction that has flow on effects. It is these moments which shape your life.
Courageous Moments Shape Your Life
The bit I don’t agree with, is that it’s a rare moment of unity. I think there are many times when we are faced with these courageous defining moments in our lives. Every time you are faced with doing something new we have to summons the courage to overcome our uncertainties and get out of our comfort zone. It comes into every area of life. Every time we do something again that we found challenging previously we have to summons the courage to keep moving – am I going to go through the same pain? Can I repeat it? Can I do it better? Courageous moments shape your life.
In reality our lives are filled with many courageous defining moments which shape our lives.
Courage Is Like A Muscle
Courage is like a muscle. The more you exercise it the more you strengthen it and empower yourself. All of which enables you to make progress towards your goals and creating the life you desire. The less you exercise your courage, the more disempowered, inactive and flabby it becomes, and the more effort it requires to summons and action it.
Goals Exercise Your Courage Muscle
Setting and working towards your goals is a great way to practice using your courage muscle. First, by setting goals which inspire you, you are more likely to harness the courage with in to take the actions required. Secondly, setting goals provides and opportunity to grow your knowledge, skills and capacities.
